In the Peruvian Andes, alpacas are more than gentle grazers - they are a lifeline. For generations, alpaquero families have relied on these resilient animals for warmth, income, and a deep connection to the land. At PAKA, we’ve built our brand around that connection. From day one, our mission has been to connect you to where your clothing comes from and support the communities who create it.
This fall, we’re taking that mission to a new level: PAKA is vitaminizing 60,000 alpacas in Peru.
How Are We Supporting Their Health?
This year, we’re launching one of the largest alpaca vitaminization programs in the Peruvian Andes. Between September and November, alpaca herds will receive essential supplements, including vitamins A, D, and E to strengthen their immune systems, support reproduction, and improve overall nutrition. For herds showing signs of malnutrition or anemia, additional B12 support may be provided after veterinary evaluation. Alongside the treatments, we are training alpaca herders through community workshops, sharing knowledge on animal nutrition and care so that these practices can be sustained over time. Healthier alpacas lead to higher-quality fiber and more resilient livelihoods for the families who depend on them.
Why Vitamins?
High-altitude conditions and droughts can make it difficult for alpacas to get all the nutrients they need. Over time, that affects their health, the strength of their fiber, and the well-being of the families who care for them. By providing essential vitamins, we’re helping these herds stay strong, improving the quality of their fleece, and supporting a more sustainable future for everyone involved.
This effort builds on years of alpaca and alpaquero impact:
- Traceable Alpaca Fiber: Every PAKA item is traceable to its origin. Simply scan the QR code to see exactly where your alpaca fiber came from - creating connection back to source and supporting the generations of alpaquero traditions that led to our fiber today.
- Building Greenhouses: Alpaquero communities often face poor nutrition. Given their remote location, families often travel over an hour simply to buy vegetables twice a week. By building and renovating greenhouses, we’ve helped increase access to fresh vegetables and reduce food expenses - building towards long-term food sovereignty for these communities.
- Donating Alpacas: Earlier this year, we donated 40 breeding alpacas to two alpaquero communities. These animals will strengthen their herds for generations to come, providing a renewable source of income and strengthening rural economies.
Vitaminizing 60,000 alpacas is the next chapter in that story. Healthier herds mean softer, stronger fiber - the very heart of every PAKA piece you wear. More importantly, it means we’re investing in the people and ecosystems that make this fiber possible.
